Balikbayan (2024) is a short film shot in a documentary style that will share how the Filipino-American experience recontextualizes itself through the children of first-generation Filipinos.
Essentially, I am providing commentary on the question: How does the Filipino perceive itself? What similarities and differences are shared between Filipinos overseas and in the Philippines? To say that this entire process has been overwhelming is an understatement--learning to film, to edit, to get out of my comfort zone and interview has been a lot. It's also been so, so rewarding; I've received the opportunity to interact with so much of my community and people and find a deeper understanding behind the culture we've developed outside of the motherland. As cliché as it may be, this is truly only the first chapter in my progression of documenting the Filipino "immigrant" experience. I hope to venture off outside of California and eventually America to document the unique and shared experiences of Filipinos across the globe. So, I'd say, this is only part one of what I have to offer. I hope to keep this passion, this "flame", continuously burning throughout my entire life--to dedicate my time and energy into providing media that allows my people to be seen and represented.
Thank you to each and everyone of you that have supported me throughout the months. It's inspiring to have such a consistent support system that I know will always support my endeavors. I hope to make you all proud and I hope that you've learned or gained something from viewing this short film.
